In Ford reintroduced a new Mustang. Using the Fox platform, the third generation pony car would reinvent the modern muscle car. In 1979 the Mustang was also invited back to the Indianapolis 500 to pace the field. Three specially prepared cars took on the duties of Indy while 10,478 production cars took to the streets.
