1985 Was definitely the year Ford reignited the Muscle Car War. The 1985 Mustang 5.0 was released with significantly improved horsepower. The addition of a roller cam increased lift and for, but the bulk of the horsepower and performance increases came from a new exhaust. This power output rating was increased for the carbureted V8 to 210hp, the EFI version of the same engine combo was still rated at 165hp.
The 1985 Mustang 5.0 used stainless steel tubular headers feeding into a single catalytic converter and dual tail pipes. This exhaust greatly improved scavenging of the exhaust gases – increasing horsepower by 45hp (27%) and torque by 20ft-lbs.
